Digital Realty launches Digital Academy to address labor shortages in the IT sector

Amsterdam, December 3, 2024 – Digital Realty has launched the Digital Academy, an in-house training program designed to prepare MBO students for careers in the data center industry. The Digital Academy aims to bridge the gap between the increasing demand for skilled professionals and the limited supply of talent in the IT job market.

Addressing the Talent Gap in the IT and Data Center Sectors

The IT sector faces a persistent shortage of technical talent, a challenge also evident in the data center industry. Despite its critical importance, the data center sector remains relatively unknown to many qualified candidates. Digital Realty seeks to engage these candidates early, raising awareness of career opportunities in the field. By doing so, the company contributes to their professional development while bolstering future employment in this essential yet often overlooked sector.

A Tailored Training Pathway for MBO Students

With the launch of the Digital Academy, Digital Realty is taking a proactive approach to talent development. The program offers an eight-month curriculum tailored to candidates with entry-level qualifications, such as an MBO Level 2 diploma or a high school (HAVO) diploma. Participants are employed by Digital Realty, working three days a week in a team environment while dedicating one day to training sessions. These sessions provide guided support for their assignments and projects.

Focusing on power supply and cooling systems within data centers, the program trains participants to become entry-level data center technicians. As site engineers, they will play a key role in ensuring the continuity of power supply and cooling operations. This includes conducting preventative maintenance to guarantee uninterrupted power and operational cooling, even in the event of disruptions.

A Collaborative Initiative with Broader Impact

Sander van Kesteren, Project Manager of the Digital Academy at Digital Realty, highlights the initiative's societal significance:
"We are thrilled to launch the Digital Academy, an initiative we wholeheartedly support. This program provides a platform where various partners can contribute voluntarily in their free time, making a meaningful impact on our shared mission. By fostering collaboration, we bridge the gap between labor market demand and supply. There is significant untapped potential, and through the Digital Academy, we aim to take responsibility and seize opportunities to address this challenge effectively. Together, we can leverage these opportunities to combat the labor shortage."

First Cohort Begins Training

The first group of six students—three men and three women—began their training on December 1, 2024. Digital Realty plans to enroll a new group every six months over the next three years, expanding the program’s impact and reach.

By investing in early career development, Digital Realty is not only addressing immediate labor market needs but also shaping a skilled workforce for the future of the data center industry.
